All That Jazz

This canvas is only 14 x 11 x 1.5” but has many different acrylic skins attached.

All That Jazz, © B. Ragalyi 2016

The most interesting skin is the oval.  I sprayed HF iridescent pearl on a heavy plastic sheet, printed the abstract figure line on it using an Epson printer, then cut out the shape. Turns out because the sprayed acrylic on the plastic was not very thick, as I wanted it to be transparent, when I started applying soft gel gloss to it, it disintegrated!  Back to the drawing board.  I coated the plastic sheet with soft gel gloss and after it dried, sprayed on the iridescent pearl, printed the black line, cut the shape and successfully applied soft gel gloss to the skin and attached it to the canvas.

When I coat a roller with acrylic paint I now roll it out on a plastic sheet as it makes a skin for future use.  The green area is such a skin.  It can be attached with soft gel gloss or matte which I brush onto the canvas.  The brown line was also made on a plastic sheet and transferred.

This shows how the painting gradually developed. The 2 little circles and lines are thicker skins, peeled off and attached.  The oval is my paper concept.  As this shows, the large circle was on top but it flattened the painting so later I brushed some of the green over it which adds to the feel that the green is slightly transparent.

Due to my camera and differences between monitors, the painting will probably look a little different.

Another acrylic skin experiment

A workshop I attended had the tables covered with plastic sheeting and I discovered that dry acrylic paint could be pulled from it.  It is Husky Plastic Sheeting, 3 ft. x 50 ft., 4 mil, which I found at Walmart.   Back in my studio I was preparing to use a roller to apply an acrylic underpainting to canvas so I rolled out the paint on the plastic.  Below is the result.

For this application I sprayed the acrylic with alcohol while it was still wet which produced the speckled effect.  The blue tapes are guides so that when I applied soft gel gloss to the canvas board I could reposition the dried acrylic where I wanted it.

This shows the plastic with the black squiggles before they were attached.  (The photo is blurry.)

Below is the completed 6x8" canvas board.  The circle is watercolor paper.   Other additions are pieces of dried acrylic.

My Solo Exhibit Information & Opus No. 460

My exhibit "Visual Music" opens this week at White Hills Gallery, Camp Verde, AZ, on Thursday, September 19 and ends on Monday, October 28, 2013.  An opening reception will be held on Friday, September 20, from 5:00 - 8:00 PM.  I will be doing a demo, using a mouth atomizer to blow paint, on Saturday, September 28 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM

This painting is photographed against a brown background as its lightest part is pearlescent paint which has a little shine to it.  I used several different painted papers for the collages, more unexpected pairings of colors and papers!

Opus No. 459

This feels musical to me, therefore, its name.  It fascinates me how disparate pieces come together in a composition.  It keeps me exploring new possibilities. Can be hung vertically also.

The light molding paste texture has iridescent bronze brushed on overall and sprayed with water which brings out the green in the paint in several areas.  The light vertical area on the right is light reflecting off the copper paint, an effect you get in different areas of the painting depending on your angle of view.  The collages are w.c. paper with acrylic paint. This will fit in a 6x8" floater frame even with the overlaps.

Hang Loose, revised painting

Once in awhile I decide a painting needs further work.  This is one of them.  It was originally posted on  August 23, 2011.  I included additional acrylic skins and added Sennelier oil pastel in places on the larger red shape.  I kept a little of the background wall to show its uneven edges.  Here is its new incarnation:

Sketching to live music

On a recent vacation in Canada I attended a celtic choir concert.  I took a pen and small sketchbook and drew to the music.  I do not look at the page while sketching.  I find this another enjoyable way to listen to music. My fingers will even do this same type of movement if I do not have a sketchbook handy.  The titles are the names of the music sung or played.  Below are a few of my sketches:

Here are some of my drawings from an instrumental concert:

On occasion I have used similar drawings in my paintings, printing them on acrylic skins.
